Description
Rode Mill is a disused cloth mill dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of rubble Doulting stone with ashlar quoins and dressings, topped with a double-Roman clay tile gabled roof. The building has a rectangular plan and stands three storeys high, with a basement at road level primarily occupied by mill stream races. Originally, it housed two mill wheels, which have since been removed.
The front elevation features six windows, consisting of three-light fixed casements with glazing bars, some of which are now blocked. These are set in plain stone mullion frames with cambered heads. Access is provided by three stone steps leading to a vertically boarded entrance door, which is framed by a plain stone surround with a cambered head. The rear elevation mainly consists of 24-pane cast iron fixed casements.
Inside, the mill has heavy timber floors supported by cross beams and 'A'-frame roof trusses with ties and collars, some of which have been railed to accommodate machinery that is no longer present. At the time of the survey, the interior and roof were noted to be in a state of advanced disrepair. Additionally, a moulded stone 4-centred arch with a blank infill panel is built into a low stone wall at the northwest corner of the building.
