Description
Tollgate Cottage, located on the A36, is a mid-18th century turnpike house and tollgate that has been converted into a cottage. The building is primarily constructed of rubble Doulting stone, featuring an ashlar front and a stone slate hipped roof with a central stone chimney stack. It stands two storeys tall, with a rear wing at a lower level forming an "L" shape, which also has a hipped roof. The roadside elevation includes 9- and 12-pane top hung casements, while the rear wing features later 4-pane casements and one 2-light plain stone mullion window. The entrance boasts a 6-panel door set in a square head frame, with plain ashlar reveals and a flat slate hood above.
