Description
Tollgate Cottage is a former toll house that has been converted into a regular dwelling, likely built in 1841. The building features solid roughcast walls and a hipped slated roof, with a central projection that has a flat felted roof. There are two rendered chimneys symmetrically placed at each end of the ridge. The cottage is a single storey, with a front that includes a central projection containing a doorway flanked by a window on each of its canted sides, and further flanked by a window on either side. The half-glazed door is probably from the 20th century. The windows have pointed arches and contain barred sashes, with 12 panes below and interlacing bars forming Gothic arches above. The interior was not inspected.
Additionally, there is a short stretch of roughcast boundary wall to the left of the cottage, which rises just short of the eaves level. This wall has a small pitched slate roof and is likely made of cob. At the right-hand end of the wall, there is a plank door.
