Description
The gate piers and gates to Barnstaple Cemetery were built in 1856, designed by RD Gould (Brooks). The piers are made of local stone with granite ashlar dressings, while the gates are cast iron, including one cast-iron pier. The design is in the Gothic Revival style. On the left side, there is a pedestrian gate, and on the right, a pair of carriage gates. The square section piers have battered bases and are topped with a stout granite string, featuring chamfered corners and four gables, each adorned with a blind trefoil. The left carriage gate is hung from a square section cast-iron pier, which is stamped with the name of the founders, “? & Petters, Barnstaple.” This pier has a shallow pyramidal cap and sunk panels on each side. The matching carriage gates have intersecting Gothic arches above and below the dog rail, which is decorated with a frieze of quatrefoils, and a curved top rail with fleur-de-lys finials. Barnstaple Cemetery was established by the Barnstaple Burial Board in 1856, with RD Gould serving as the town surveyor.
