Description
Shawford House is a country house dating from the 17th century, largely rebuilt in the early 19th century, probably around 1815 for the Node family. The house is constructed of stucco and has a hipped, double-span slate roof with three brick stacks set off the ridge. The double-pile plan is symmetrical, with a central bay projecting slightly. The facade is organised as a 1:1:1 bay arrangement, featuring sash windows with glazing bars to the first floor. The central doorway is set within an ashlar surround, now with a late 19th-century four-panelled door and transom light. A semi-circular portico of stone in a Roman-Doric style stands before the entrance. It features a triglyph frieze, a moulded cornice and parapet, and decorative cast iron balustrading above the parapet, supported by two columns and two pilasters. A lower, two-bay wing is set back to the left, with sash windows with glazing bars and moulded stone surrounds, and a door with double, half-glazed doors in a matching surround. The interior retains many original features, including a staircase with ornamental cast iron balustrading, modillion cornices, plaster friezes, fireplaces from the same period, reeded doorcases with lion heads at the angles, six-panel doors, and a stairwell lantern.
