Description

The Village Cross, dating from the 15th century, is located adjacent to the entrance of the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary. It was repaired in 1979 and is made of dressed stone. The base consists of two square steps, with the lower step featuring a bench and a dripmould, as well as a splayed set-off. The cross has a large square socket, with the upper face being octagonal and adorned with broad convex broaches. The shaft is tapering and octagonal, capped by the base of a calvary, and topped with a 19th-century finial cross. Originally, the cross stood by the roadside but was moved to its current position in the early 19th century, as noted by Pooley in "Old Crosses of Somerset" from 1877.
