Description

MAPERTON CP ST62NE MAPERTON VILLAGE 4/135 Stables 15 metres west of Maperton House (formerly listed with Manor House) 24.3.61 GV II

Stable block. Probably 1876. Cary stone cut and squared, ashlar dressings; plain clay tile roof over stone slate base courses, west side, Welsh slates to east side, between coped gables. Two storeys, 7-bay west elevation; bays 2 and 6 have gabled windows with ball finials to crowns; bays 3, 5 and 7 have 4-pane sash windows set in architraves; moulded doorway with flat hood bay 2, and to bay 3 a semi-circular archway, now blocked with early C20 stone 3-light window in centre, and over this a later gable with leaded window: in centre of roof a clock-tower in C17 style, timber with lead roof, octagonal plan; diamond clock faces to east and west under bell-hip roof with weathervane. On east side some early C20 modifications - the chief feature two open pitched-roof timber canopies in C17 style. Impressive in its own right, it contributes much to the setting of Maperton House (qv).
