Description
The stables, built around 1870, are located approximately 120 meters west of Middleton Tower. Constructed from carstone with gault brick dressings, the building features a roof covered in plain tiles with a decorative ridge. It has a range of two heights, with a cross wing to the south.
The west facade facing the yard consists of three bays, with the left two bays being two stories high. This section includes a gault sawtooth cornice and a central doorway with a pointed segmental head. On either side of the doorway, there are double lights with glazing bars. Above the doorway, there is a loft door with a balcony and a gable featuring brick tumbling-in. The first floor of the third bay has a double casement window with glazing bars.
To the left, bays four and five are higher, with a gable on the cross wing of bay five and a cross stack positioned between bays four and five. Bay four has a large archway leading to an inner passage, while bay six features larger arch and coach-house doors. There is also a double casement with glazing bars on the first floor of bay four, and bay five has a gable with brick tumbling-in and a Gothick Y-tracery light. The north arch includes brick tumbling-in, with three-light casements on both the ground and first floors.
On the rear (east side), bay one is slightly forward and gabled. Bays three to five each have a pair of stone-dressed Gothick openings with leaded lights on the ground floor, and each bay has a gablet dormer for ventilation in the attic.
Inside, bays one to three feature a zig-zag gault brick floor and hexagonal white glazed tiles on the walls. The stable loose boxes are partitioned with cast iron bars and posts. The stables are included for their group value.
