Description

The Middleton War Memorial is a polished grey granite structure located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, which is listed at Grade II*. It is situated near the path leading to the south porch and close to several Grade II-listed churchyard monuments. The memorial features a Classical vase with two krater-like handles and etched decoration, which stands on the pedimented top of a square stele. The stele has a two-stage base and is set on a square concrete platform.

The front faces of the pediments are adorned with decorative foliage motifs, and both the top and bottom of the stele are encircled by an incised pattern that resembles metopes. The main dedicatory inscription, incised on the front face of the stele, reads: "SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF MIDDLETON WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919 'GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS' JOHN 15: 13." The names of those commemorated from the First World War are listed on either side of the stele, while the rear features an inscription for the Second World War, reading "1939-1945 (NAMES)."

The memorial is surrounded by a metal rail supported by eight low ornamental iron posts.
