Description

The Cottage is an estate house built in 1861, constructed from carstone rubble with brick dressings and decorative tiles. It has an irregular plan with forward and side wings and stands two storeys tall. The building features a brick plinth, chamfered brick surrounds, skewback arches over the windows, a sawtooth brick cornice, shaped brick kneelers, and gable parapets.

The central forward gabled wing has brick tumbling-in and an axial stack with four octagonal shafts made of red brick, decorated with moulded designs of fleur de lys, thistle, rose, and flowers. The ground floor includes bay windows and a sawtooth cornice leading to a polygonal roof adorned with decorative tiles. The first floor has a central two-light casement window and a slit window to the attic.

To the left, there is a lower one-bay wing with a single casement light on both the ground and first floors. On the right, a short single bay two-storeyed wing features a Gothick doorway on the left with a boarded door and decorative strap hinges, along with a raking canopy at the angle with fretwork verge supported by a wooden post and a single light casement on the first floor. Drainheads at the angles of the wings display the Jarvis crest and the date 1861. The Cottage is included for its group value and as an unaltered example of a mid-19th century estate house.
