Description
The Cottages are a pair of estate cottages built in 1906 for John Raylor Ramsden. They are constructed from carstone and have plain tile roofs. The cottages feature four bays and are one storey high with an attic, designed in the Arts and Craft style with a focus on reflective symmetry. The exterior is made of carstone rubble, with dressed carstone used for the quoins, bands, and surrounds, and leaded lights in the openings.
The bands above the ground floor openings extend around the sides, with projecting keystones above each opening. The central two bays are recessed, each containing a three-light casement window on the ground floor and an adjacent three-light roof dormer. There are cross stones on the left and right sides made of brick with raised stepped strips. The outer bays have gables that slope down towards the centre; the ground floor features a three-light casement window on the outer side and a doorway with a boarded door leading towards the central bays. The attic gables each have a three-light casement window, with the one on bay four having plain glass and a stone shield above it displaying the date 1906 and the monogram JTR.
These cottages are noted as an example of estate cottages in the Arts and Craft style that utilize local materials.
