Description
The Old Lodge is a former lodge to Middleton Hall, dated 1837. It is constructed from finely coursed carstone rubble with gault brick dressings and features a fishscale slate roof with gabled ends. The gable ends are adorned with elaborate wavy and pierced bargeboards, complete with pendants and finials. There are two axial stacks with pairs of tall octagonal gault brick shafts.
The building has a T-shaped plan, with a cross-wing on the right that projects at the front, and a service wing that projects at the back. A small late 20th-century extension is located at the rear. The lodge is situated next to the stables of Middleton Hall on the right and has the drive entrance on the left. It is designed in the Tudor Gothic style.
The exterior is one storey high and features an asymmetrical two-window south front facing the road. The projecting gabled wing to the right has an open porch at the angle, supported by wooden chamfered posts and featuring a lean-to roof. This side has a late 20th-century door. The windows are set in large chamfered gault brick openings, although the original window frames have been replaced with late 20th-century plastic casements. Above the right-hand window in the gable, there is a stone shield inscribed 'Anno Dom 1837'. At the rear of the back wing, there is a small late 20th-century single-storey brick extension. The interior has not been inspected.
