Description
The Lifton War Memorial is a granite structure approximately 5 meters tall, located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, which is a Grade I-listed building, and it overlooks Parsonage Court. The memorial is designed as a plain Latin cross with an octagonal shape, standing on a four-stepped octagonal base.
The main dedicatory inscription starts on the front face of the upper step of the base, stating "TO THE GLORY OF GOD" and continues on the step below with "AND IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF LIFTON WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." The names of those commemorated are listed on the faces of the step below this, while the inscription for the Second World War is located on the front face of the lowest step, reading "1939 – 1945 (6 NAMES)." All inscriptions are made with applied metal lettering.
