Description

Lifton Cottage Hotel is a house that has been in use as a hotel since around the 1830s. It features a whitewashed and rendered exterior with a slate roof and rendered stacks topped with brick shafts. The building has a picturesque appearance with Gothic details and is designed in an L shape. One range runs parallel to Fore Street, while a more irregular range at right angles creates an attractive forecourt.

The hotel is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical four-bay main range. The facade is accentuated on the left by a polygonal front projection with a pyramidal roof and on the right by two-storey canted bays. There is a flat-roofed porch, which is an addition, situated between the projection and the bay. The entrance, dating from the 1830s, is located on the left side of the front and features an arched, studded timber door with strap hinges and glazed trefoils in the spandrels. This entrance is flanked by two arched timber Gothic windows with glazing bars. Above, there is a Gothic window on the first floor with an arched central light in a rectangular frame and marginal glazing. The polygonal bay has two three-light arched Gothic timber windows with glazing bars, while above the porch is a two-light casement with glazing bars. The canted bays have four-light windows, with six panes per light on the first floor and eight on the ground floor.

The range parallel to Fore Street includes Gothic arched windows set in rectangular architraves, with two first-floor two-light windows and one three-light ground-floor window, although the latter is missing glazing bars. The left return of this range features one-light Gothic windows. At the rear of the main range, there are four gabled dormers, all of which also have Gothic windows.

Inside, the hotel retains an early 19th-century staircase with stick balusters, along with contemporary joinery and cornice details, including an unusual skirting board decorated with applied fleur de lis motifs. Some stained glass is also present. A 20th-century addition at the right end (south) is not included in the listing.
