Description

This is a milepost located on the west side of High Road in Castle Cary, dating from the early 19th century. It is made of cast iron and was produced by the founder Wightman. The milepost has a triangular shape, with sides measuring 305 millimeters wide and a height of approximately 800 millimeters. It features a raked top and a back panel. There is an additional plaque on the north angle face, which has reverse curve corners and reads 'Ilchester 8 1/2 miles', with the name set on a curve. The plaque on the south side is missing. The founder's name is cast on the leading edge of the milepost. This section of the road has been maintained by the Langport, Somerton and Castle Cary Trust since 1792.
