Description
This is a milepost located at the southern corner of the yard of the White Hart Inn in Castle Cary, dating from the early 19th century. It is made of cast iron and was produced by the Wightman founder. The milepost has a triangular shape with sides measuring 305 millimeters wide and a height of 850 millimeters. It features a raked top and lacks a back panel. On its angled faces, there are two plaques with reverse curve corners. The left plaque reads "Wincanton/6.25/Somerton/10.25/miles," while the right plaque states "Ilchester/10/Shepton Mallett (sic)/8/miles." All town names, except for Shepton Mallet, are set on a curve, and the founder's name is cast on the leading edge. This section of the road has been maintained by the Langport, Somerton and Castle Cary Trust since 1778.
