Description

The Sandford family chest tomb is located in the churchyard about 20 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St Augustine. This casket tomb dates from the mid-19th century and is made of Portland stone. It features a raised central section with a ledger top, set on a stepped moulded plinth. The tomb is adorned with a casket blob supported by lion's paws and includes inscribed panels on the north and south faces. The north face commemorates Henry Sandford, who died in 1841, while the south face is dedicated to his sister, Caroline Sandford, who died in 1851. At the time of the survey in March 1984, the tomb was partially obscured by ivy.
