Description

The Rectory is a house, now serving as a rectory, built around 1815 with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries, specifically in 1933 and 1963. The building features roughcast over rubble, a slate roof with coped verges, a heavy moulded cornice, and brick stacks on the south gable end, along with roughcast stacks to the left of the entrance and on the west gable end. It has an L-plan layout facing west, with 19th and 20th-century additions on the north front. The south gable end faces a forecourt leading to the tower of St Augustine's Church.

The structure is two storeys high with a 2:3 bay arrangement, showcasing 16-pane sash windows. The ground floor is enhanced by a 3:6 bay cast iron trelliswork verandah with a glazed pentice roof, and the entrance is located in the angle, featuring many-paned three-quarter glazed double doors. There is also a 20th-century garage with an asbestos roof attached to the west gable end, which is not included in the listing. The south gable end is illuminated by two 16-pane sash windows, while the long east front has two 16-pane pointed arch windows with divided tracery that light the staircase.

The interior has been extensively altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. Historical records indicate that a large mansion known as The Court House existed on this site in 1791, which was reportedly demolished around 1815 when the Brickdale family moved to Monkton House, located to the northwest. The current building became the Rectory in 1933. It is possible that the south wall may be a remnant of the earlier dwelling that extended further south, but significant internal alterations have removed any features of interest. The roof structure has not been inspected. The building is primarily listed for its group value.
