Description
No. 22 Standards Road is a house built around the 1830s. It features a stucco exterior with ashlar joint-lining and corner pilasters, topped by a bitumen-coated low-pitched hipped roof with deep eaves and brick side stacks. The building has a double-depth plan, consisting of two main front rooms and a central entrance/stairhall, with the two rear service rooms combined into one and a small single-storey wing added at the back.
The house is two storeys tall and has a symmetrical three-bay east front. It includes 16-pane sash windows with rusticated voussoirs and a central doorway framed by a pilastered doorcase with panelled reveals. The doorway is topped by a semi-circular fanlight with radiating glazing bars and a panelled door. The original entablature is missing, and a 20th-century timber porch has been added. At the rear, the doorway has been blocked, and there are 20th-century windows and a single-storey wing on the left.
Inside, much of the original joinery remains, including panelled doors and a staircase with a balustrade of stick balusters and a moulded handrail that ramps up to column newels. The front right-hand room features a moulded chimneypiece and an original fire grate, while the room below has elliptical arch alcoves on either side of the chimney-breast.
