Description

No. 17 is a house dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, located in Southtown, Dartmouth. The exterior is stuccoed over stone rubble, with the front surface lightly emphasised to resemble ashlar. The end stacks have rendered brick chimneyshafts and original chimneypots, and the roof is slate-covered.

The house has a double-depth plan, with one room per floor arranged around an entrance hall containing the staircase on the right-hand side. It is three storeys high, with attic space, and has a three-window front featuring horned 12-pane sashes, the upper-floor windows being shorter than those below. A recessed round-headed doorway is situated on the right-hand side, leading to a fielded 6-panel door and a fanlight with a radial pattern of glazing bars, approached by three stone steps. A timber moulded eaves cornice runs along the top of the front elevation. A gable-ended roof is present. A large 20th-century dormer to the front contains casement windows with glazing bars. A smaller, hipped-roof dormer is located at the rear. The interior has not been inspected, but is likely to contain features of interest.
