Description

This is a house, probably dating from the mid-19th century, located in Southtown, Dartmouth. It is constructed of stone rubble, with a stucco ground floor and slate-hung timber framing above. The end stacks are brick and have old chimney pots, and the roof is slate.

The house has a double-depth plan, with two rooms wide. The front facade is two windows wide and three storeys high. A four-panel door with a plain overlight and side light with glazing bars is situated at the right end of the ground floor. To its left is a pair of four-pane sashes with horizontal glazing bars. The left end of the building includes a water conduit within a round-headed alcove. The conduit has a projecting flat surround and a water pipe protruding from the back. Above the conduit is a stone plaque with concave top corners, an incised reeded frame, and inscribed with the initials "FS" (presumably of the Feoffees of South Town) as well as the dates 1511, 1792 (possibly a mistake), and 1899. The later dates likely indicate phases of rebuilding. A moulded timber cornice runs along the first-floor level. Above this, the slate-hung front includes two bands of scallop-shaped slates. There are two flat-roofed canted bays rising through the first and second floors, containing horned four-pane sashes to the first floor and replacement sashes without glazing bars to the second floor, with moulded timber cornices above the windows. Deep eaves have a plastered soffit and a moulded timber cornice. The roof is gable-ended. The interior is not inspected, but 19th-century joinery and other detail is likely present.
