Description
37 Newcomen Road is a house that has been converted into flats. It likely dates from the 18th century, with some alterations made in the mid-19th century and later. The building is constructed of stucco on stone rubble, featuring end stacks with rendered chimney shafts and pots. The roof is slate, adorned with pierced crested ridge tiles.
The house is three storeys tall and has a symmetrical front with three windows. The stucco façade is lightly textured to resemble ashlar stone. There are plat bands at the first and second-floor levels. The central entrance is a round-headed recessed doorway accessed by three stone steps. It features a well-crafted mid-19th century five-panel door with mouldings and geometric inner panels, topped by a fanlight with a simple circular arrangement of glazing bars.
The outer bays on the first floor have late 19th-century canted bay windows with moulded timber cornices and flat roofs. All windows are horned replacement sashes without glazing bars. The building has a good timber modillion cornice, and the roof is gable-ended. The interior has not been inspected but is expected to be of interest.
