Description

This is a late 18th or early 19th century house located in Southtown, Dartmouth. The exterior is constructed from local stone rubble, with the front face stuccoed and lightly treated to resemble ashlar. The end stacks have rendered brick chimneyshafts, and the roof is slate-covered. The house has a symmetrical two-window front, with a central square-headed doorway recessed and containing an original top-glazed six-panel door. The inscription "STE HELENE" is carved into a stone block to the right of the doorway. Each side of the doorway features a 19th-century tripartite sash window with a central 12-pane sash; the lower sashes lack glazing bars. Projecting canted bays extend through the first and second floors, with replacement four-pane sashes. A timber cornice runs along the ground floor and around the bases of the bays, while a timber modillion eaves cornice sits above. The roof runs parallel to the street. Rear windows are 20th-century casements, and 20th-century extensions are present to the rear. The interior was not inspected but is likely to be of interest.
