Description
The wall surrounding the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, built in the 19th century, includes a gateway with piers and gates. This continuous wall encloses the churchyard on the north, south, east, and west sides and is made of coursed and squared rubble, with some sections featuring cement capping and stone capping on the western side and along the Main Road frontage. The gateway is located opposite the church's south doorway and consists of paired squared rubble piers topped with moulded freestone caps. It also features a wrought-iron lamp overthrow with a later lamp and a pair of ornamental wrought-iron gates. Historically, this churchyard was the site where several of Monmouth's rebels were hanged after the Battle of Sedgemoor on July 6, 1685, and 16 of the King's men were buried either in the Church of St Mary the Virgin or in the churchyard.
