Description

SOUTH PETHERTON CP ST41NW COMPTON DURVILLE 2/95 Lewton Cottage, and gateway on north-west corner attached to Compton Farmhouse

GV II

Detached cottage. Early C19. Ham stone roughly cut and squared, but with ashlar quoins and Flemish bond red brick facade; clay pantiles between stepped coped gables; brick end chimney stacks. Two storeys with attics, 3 bays. Horizontal-bar casement windows with flat gauged brick arches, 3-light to outer bays and 2-light to lower bay 2, possibly a former doorway, blank upper bay 2: lean-to against east gable with open porch and C20 part-glazed door. West gable has 2-light attic casement window under timber lintel, and on northwest corner short length of ashlar wall about 2.5 metres high, with plain coping and pointed-arched gateway, linking this house to Compton Farmhouse (q.v.). Interior not seen.
