Description

Merle Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of ham stone rubble with ashlar dressings and has a triple-roll clay tiled roof with high, stepped coped gables. A ball finial sits atop the west gable, indicating that the roof was formerly thatched. A stone chimney stack with a baffle top is located at the east end. The cottage is two storeys high and has an irregular fenestration pattern across three bays. It features plain mullioned windows with slight chamfers, containing 2, 1, and 2 lights on the upper floor, and a 2-light window below. A 20th-century lean-to porch, matching the style of the cottage, has been added to the lower bay, containing a 20th-century casement window and door on its east side. The interior remains unseen.
