Description
Rydon Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse dating from the 18th century, with modifications made towards the end of the 19th century. It is constructed from roughly cut and squared ham stone and features Bridgwater patent interlocking clay tiles on its stepped coped gables, along with stone chimney stacks. The building has two storeys with an attic and consists of five bays.
There is a plinth, and signs of extension to the tops of the flank walls suggest that it may have originally had a thatched roof. The windows are mostly hollow-chamfered mullioned types set in chamfered recesses, with two-light windows in the upper bays one to four and a four-light window in the lower bay five. Bays one and three have single-light windows, while lower bay three and upper bay five feature three-light ovolo-mould windows in wave-mould recesses. All lower windows have labels.
In lower bay four, there is a tall boarded door with toplights set in a chamfered cambered archway, topped with a flat stone hood on brackets, all of which are from the 19th century. A 17th-century door and doorway appear to be reused against the north gable in a single-storey outbuilding that has a roof covered with triple-roll clay tiles. Additionally, there is a single-storey wing that projects considerably from the south-west corner of the house, and an extension at the rear. The interior has not been seen.
