Description
Corner Cottage, also known as No 49, is located at the junction of two rows in Hinton St George, set back from South Street and standing proud on High Street. It likely dates from the 18th century and is constructed from ham stone rubble with ashlar dressings. The thatched roof features a stepped coped gable on the north side and is hipped with a partial continuation to the south, along with brick chimney stacks.
The building has two storeys and a two-bay east elevation. It showcases hollow-chamfer mullioned windows set in chamfered recesses, with three and four-light windows on the first floor and a four-light window with a label on the ground floor's lower bay. The entrance features a six-panel door with toplights beneath a timber lintel. The north gable shows some straight joints, while the west side has a 16-pane sash window on the first floor and a small square bay window below it, which has small-pane casements on an ashlar base and a lead flat roof.
Although the interior has not been seen, the property is complemented by wrought-iron railings that extend along the entire frontage, from the corner of No 51 back to the north-east corner of the house. These railings are set on a low stone base with simple arrowhead tops and include a single gate that matches the opposite door, enhancing the house's setting and contributing to the streetscape on this prominent corner. No 51 is attached to the south gable of Corner Cottage.
