Description
The Poulett Arms Inn is an 18th-century inn located on the north side of High Street in Hinton St George. It is constructed of ham stone ashlar with a thatched roof, featuring coped gables and brick chimney stacks at the ends and between bays. The inn is arranged in an 'L' shape, with two storeys and four bays. The windows are sash windows in plain openings; the outer bays have windows with 12 panes, while the inner bays have 16 panes. A 19th-century door is situated between bays one and two, set within an architraved opening and sheltered by a timber hood with a hipped shingle covering, under which is a projecting hanging sign fixed to a wrought-iron bracket. Casement windows are present on the first floor and in the east gable's attic. A lean-to and a rear extension also feature thatched roofs. The interior of the public rooms has been altered. The inn was previously known as the Hare and Hounds Inn by 1770, but its name was changed to The Poulett Arms around 1824.
