Description
Somerville is a detached house with probable origins in the 17th century, which was refronted in the 18th and 20th centuries. The facade is made of ham stone ashlar, while the sides and rear are constructed from coursed rubble. It features a thatched roof between coped gables and has one ashlar slab and one brick chimney stack at the ends. The house has two storeys and three bays. The outer bays contain pairs of 12-pane sash windows, which replaced earlier two-storey bay windows; the upper bay has timber lintels and the lower bay has voussoired flat arches. The second bay from the left has a later 4-pane sash window. The lower bay two features a six-panel door set in a beaded recess, accompanied by early 20th-century segmental-arched keystoned sidelights. The end gables are plain, and there is a slated two-storey extension at the rear with a parallel roof.
Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to likely be a three-room cross-passage house that has been modified. The east room has been extended to the rear and is furnished with later 18th-century wall panelling. The stairs are centrally located, and there is a rear lean-to on the west end that extends to two storeys. The main rear extension was apparently built as a separate house but is now incorporated into the main structure. The west room features a cambered-arched fireplace with incised spandrils, and various collar truss types in the roof suggest some reuse.
Surrounding the front corners of the house is a low stone ashlar wall with curved corners, topped with neck-point wrought-iron railings and a pair of gates opposite the door. The larger pair of gates has cast spearpoints on the upper and middle rails, segmental top rails, and semi-circle braces, mounted on timber posts against the west gable, enhancing the setting of the property.
