Description
The railings to Old Bincombe, located in Crewkerne, date from the mid-19th century and consist of a wall, gate piers, gates, and railings. The wall and gate piers are made of Ham Hill stone ashlar, while the gates and railings are crafted from wrought iron.
To the left, tall gate piers with stepped pyramidal caps support elaborate double gates. The central horizontal rail features alternating pierced quatrefoils and quincunx designs, with ornamented S scrolls positioned between the straight verticals. Above this rail, single ornamented scrolls are present. Each gate has an inverted semi-circle in the upper half, adorned with a row of palmette-type motifs and large ornamented S scrolls that rise higher toward the center.
On the right, the piers for the service entrance gates are simpler, with plain designs and pyramidal caps. The double gates here have long and short rails, along with a central horizontal rail decorated with four fluer-de-lys within circles. Between these gates is approximately 10 meters of plinth-type wall, featuring a sloping ashlar top on slabs arranged in a herring-bone pattern. The railings are low, topped with scroll designs above a horizontal rail.
