Description
Old Bincombe is a house dated 1855, constructed from rough limestone ashlar with Ham Hill stone rusticated quoins, architraves, and doorcase. It features a hipped slate roof with stone stacks flanking the central range. The building has a double-depth central-staircase plan and stands two storeys tall with a symmetrical three-window arrangement. All windows on the front and first-floor returns are 6/6-pane sashes set in moulded architraves. The shallow roof has wide bracketed eaves, and the pediment above the stepped-forward central entrance bay is also bracketed. The doorcase features a cornice on consoles.
Inside, there is a large open well with an open string staircase that has a wreathed oak handrail and a curtail step, topped with a skylight that has frosted patterned glass. The library on the right was oak panelled in 1925. The sitting room on the left has high skirting boards and an ornate cornice, with a wide canted bay at the rear that has fixed-back shutters. On the first floor, the main room includes a white marble fireplace and a late 19th-century grate. The doors throughout the house are four-panel in Georgian-style architraves.
