Description
This is an 18th-century coach house, significantly altered over time. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with a plain tile roof, incorporating stone slates on the lower courses. The roof is hipped at one corner and has stepped stone coping to the gable ends. A stone ridge stack is located to the right of the corner. The building has an L-shaped plan and originally had a 2-window front, featuring timber lintels and flat stone arches above 20th-century casement windows. A single-storey lean-to wing runs across the front, containing a 20th-century door to the right and a 4-light window to the left. The interior has not been inspected.
High, rubblestone walls extend from the front and rear along Abbey Street. The front wall, approximately 5 metres long and capped with Ham Hill stone, is attached to Ham Hill stone gate piers topped with pyramidal caps. These piers support double gates made of heavy planks with studs and a moulded top edge. The rear wall, with semi-circular coping, extends for approximately 60 metres. This wall steps back at the bottom, and steps lead down to a recessed area for the outlet pipe of Pople's Well.
