Description

The front boundary wall and railings, located about 4 meters east of The Grange on Water Street, date from the 18th and 19th centuries. The boundary wall is made of Ham stone ashlar and stands approximately 2.5 meters high, featuring plain thin copings. At the south end, there are rusticated gate piers topped with stepped pyramidal caps. The railings across the front of The Grange are about 700 millimeters high, set on a sunken stone base, and consist of waisted and pointed square rails with tall cast-iron standards, which are approximately 1.2 meters apart. These standards are designed as thin balusters topped with urn finials that are about 1 meter tall, with linking chains running over the railings. The return to the south-east corner of the house has arrowhead railings, while the return to the north-east corner features a high ashlar wall with a rusticated pier and a later pair of gates opposite the door. To the north, there are curved sweeps leading to a gateway without piers, which leads to the Vicarage, although this is not included in the listing. Overall, the boundary wall and railings enhance the setting of The Grange and contribute positively to the streetscape.
