Description

The former Congregational Church Schoolrooms, now a printing works, was built in 1859. It is constructed of local stone that has been cut and squared, with ashlar dressings, and features a plain clay tiled roof behind a front coped gable. The building is single storey and consists of two bays. It has a high plinth and a plain coped gable with pinnacles on kneeler stones. The tall 20-pane cast iron casements have semi-circular radial glazed heads and are set in plain keystoned surrounds. There are plain double doors in matching surrounds, and in the gable, there is a ring plaque with a crossbar and the inscription "Congregational Chapel Schools, 1859." The east flank has a plain return with a central doorway. Extending about 2 metres from the front and returning along the south boundary are cast iron double-hoop railings, approximately 1 metre tall, with barbed arrow topped intermediate rails, set on a high random stone podium. There is a central gateway, and at the southeast corner, plain ashlar gate piers form a gateway to the chapel proper to the north. This building is part of an interesting Non-conformist Church 'campus', which includes three examples in the town, of which only this one is listed.
