Description
The school room located to the south of the Congregational Chapel was built around 1851, following the purchase of the site in that year. It is a rectangular block with one storey and a basement, featuring a tiled gabled roof and stone walls with Gothic detailing.
The west front displays a gable with a finial at the north end, which has two two-centred headed windows below and one window above. To the south of this gable is a porch with a two-centred headed entrance and buttresses. The upper floor of the building has five rectangular windows with two lights each, adorned with pierced quatrefoils or diamonds above and dripmoulds. The lower floor, or basement, contains plain two-light rectangular windows. A branch spirelet is present on the roof.
Prominently, a tall ornate Gothic window with four cusped lights and flowing tracery rises with a gable at the front facing Long Street. To the right of this window is a plain two-centred headed doorway, which can be accessed from another doorway in a high wall behind an external stair. This stair rises diagonally across the front of the building to a porch located at the upper level on the left end. A small gate at the entrance to the stair features uprights with fleur-de-lys finials.
The premises are occupied by Mr. E. J. T. Rogers and are part of a group that includes the Congregational Chapel, dwarf wall, railings, and gates to the chapel, as well as nearby properties such as Cromwell, Belmont, Wistaria House, and Thorn Bank.
