Description

This building is an outbuilding, located 15 metres north of Toomer Farmhouse, and dates from the early 17th century. It was originally a farmhouse and is now used as stables. The structure is made of local stone coursed rubble, with ashlar quoins and dressings, and features a plain clay tile roof with simple gables. It has an 'L'-shaped plan, is two storeys high with an attic, and has a four-bay north elevation. There is a continuous string course above the ground floor, with a double label over the first and second bays and a single label over the attic gable, which is coped and topped with a finial. Most windows are now blocked, but there is a three-light ovolo-mould timber-framed window in the lower bay one and a heavy cambered arched timber doorframe with wave moulding in bay two, which now has stable doors, with the left door being a 20th-century addition. There is also a single-light ovolo-mould timber window in the upper bay four. On the south side, there are stairs, which are now faced with concrete, leading to the first floor. Inside, the building features a stone sett floor, stopped chamfered main beams, and collar and tie beam roof trusses. This structure is almost certainly the earlier farmhouse on this site.
