Description
The front gate to Inwood is a 19th-century gateway made of Portland stone and wrought iron. It features a pair of central gates flanked by piers, side railings, and outer piers. The central piers are approximately 1 metre square at the base and rise to a height of 4.5 metres. They have a moulded plinth, a rusticated shaft, and corbelled bracketed cyma recta caps with double steps, each topped with lead statues: a woman with a rake on the west side and a man with a sickle on the right. The base walls connect to plainer side piers that have ball finials. The gates are intricately designed in a French style, featuring side frets and an overthrow that incorporates a cartouche with the letters MG, which stands for Merthyr Guest, all crafted in wrought iron openwork. The gates have shouldered arched tops, and the side railings are adorned with scrolled sweeps to match. This gateway is part of a large estate that includes many notable features, although the main house, built in 1881, is of lesser interest and not listed.
