Description

This building is an outbuilding, possibly used as stables, located immediately southwest of Manor Farmhouse in High Ham. It dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century and underwent alterations and extensions in the late 18th century or early 19th century. The structure is made of coursed and dressed blue lias stone and features a clay pantile roof with Hamstone coping at the gable end. There is a stone rubble stack at the north end.

The building has a long range with a loft. In the 18th or 19th century, the north end was partitioned off to create what was likely a bakehouse, which includes a gable-end fireplace. A stable extension was added at the south end, and lean-to outshuts were constructed at the rear.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical east front. It features 19th-century two-light casements with glazing bars on the right, a loft window with a chamfered two-light frame to the right of centre, a central plank door with a loft opening above, and two cart entrances on the left. The stable extension is set back on the left, and at the north end, there is a re-used timber two-light window with cusped heads.

Inside, the building has chamfered floor beams with stops and a seven-bay roof structure. The trusses feature halved dovetail lapped collars and two tiers of tenoned purlins. The north end, partitioned for the bakehouse, includes a fireplace in the gable end stack with an unchamfered timber bressumer and possibly a smoking chamber. The stable addition at the south end contains simple wooden loose-boxes.
