Description

The Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the 16th century and later. It is constructed from local lias stone that is roughly squared and coursed, with a thatched roof featuring plain gables on the main section and clay tiles on the remainder. A brick chimney stack is present. The building has a long-house plan and is single storey throughout, consisting of eight bays. Bays seven and eight are thatched, while the other bays appear to be from the 20th century.

Bays one and two feature two-light small-pane casements, bay three has a boarded door, and bays four, five, and six have aluminium casements, with a small dormer above bay five. Bay seven includes an aluminium window and a horizontal bar casement in a swept dormer above it. There is a wide boarded door in a heavy frame under a timber lintel, and bay eight has a three-light window that was formerly a six-light chamfer moulded timber frame window.

An extension to the east gable has a corrugated iron roof and was formerly a stable; the house originally extended further eastwards. Inside, the room behind bay seven features a six-panelled framed ceiling, along with a fireplace and oven, which are later insertions. The room behind bay five has a late stud partition, and the room behind bay four is open to the underside of the roof, with a lapped plank partition and evidence of an inserted floor. Some jointed cruck trusses are also present. This cottage is a rare survival in the area, representing a readily identifiable long house.
