Description

This is a mid-18th century farmhouse with alterations from the early 19th century, alongside an attached outbuilding and barn. A section of the barn dates back to the mid-17th century. The buildings are constructed of brick, with some stucco, timber framing and brick infill, and have tile roofs. The main house is arranged in an L-shape, with an outbuilding to the right, which has an attached barn projecting forward.

The two-story farmhouse has a symmetrical two-window front, with a gabled wing to the left. A plat band runs above the ground floor, topped by a modillioned brick cornice. The central entrance is topped with a bracketed open pediment and features a six-panel door. Windows are set within brick cambered arches and have 16-pane sashes, except for one 12-pane sash on the first floor to the right. There are two 19th-century gabled dormers with two-light casements, and a ground-floor window within the wing. The left return has a gabled wing, and an entrance with an overlight over a wide-board door. Windows have segmental or cambered arches. The rear of the farmhouse is stuccoed. To the right, a gable end is prominent. It has a 20th-century porch and fanlight over a six-fielded-panel door, and a canted bay window to the left, with further 16-pane sashes.

The outbuilding to the right includes a granary on the upper floor, with a modillioned brick cornice above. It has a timber lintel over a ground-floor entrance, a segmental-headed entrance to the left end, and a wide entry with a timber lintel and pitching hole above. There are inserted windows and skylights. The rear of the outbuilding has an entrance with a cambered timber lintel, along with later insertions.

The 10-bay barn has a later extension at one end. The timber frame features brick infill on a brick plinth, with subsequent brick rebuilding and extension. The inner return has three barn entrances with altered doors, as well as a 20th-century open shed. The outer return shows exposed timber framing and gabled porches to the centre and right, with a catslide outshut between, and an open shed to the right end. The gable end has square ventilation holes.

Inside the farmhouse, there are chamfered beams in the former service area, early 19th-century panelled doors and ceiling cornices, and an open-well staircase with stick balusters, a turned newel and an early 19th-century hob grate on the first floor. The attic contains 17th-century plank doors and panelled doors, with a side purlin roof. The outbuilding has heavy beams supporting a granary floor and a seven-bay king-post roof with interrupted tie beams. The barn’s interior retains 17th-century tie beam and collar trusses with principals crossed at the apex, trenched purlins, and no ridge piece. A floor has been inserted at one end. The farmhouse, outbuilding and barn form two sides of an open-ended farmyard, with a stable range on the third side.
