Description
Carey's Mill Cottage is a detached house that likely dates from the 18th century. It is constructed from roughly squared and coursed Ham stone, with ashlar dressings, and features a clay pantiled roof between stepped coped gables and brick end chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and three bays. The windows are chamfer-mullioned, without labels, with two-light windows above and three-light windows below, featuring 4-centre arched lights with incised spandrils and horizontal bar inserts. The lower bay two includes a cambered-arched doorway with a boarded door, which is topped by a moulded flat stone hood supported by console brackets. There is a single-storey addition to the north-east gable, which has later brick patching and blocking, as well as 19th-century windows in the south-west gable. High in this wall, there is a circular opening with a stone ledge, possibly used as a pigeon loft. The cottage predates the ironworks and is likely associated with one of two 18th-century mills in the area, with evidence suggesting a mill existed on this site since the Domesday period.
