Description

Peace Lane Cottage is a detached house dating from the 19th century, with possible earlier fabric incorporated into its construction. It's built of local lias stone, squared and cut, with dressings of Ham stone. The roof is slate, with stepped coped gables and brick end chimney stacks. The house has two storeys and originally three bays, with the central bay projecting slightly and featuring a gable with an ornamental finial. It has chamfered mullioned windows with square labels and diamond-leaded panes: four lights on the lower level and three lights above. A cambered arched doorway leads to a three-panel door, above which is a shaped fanlight. A small vent is located in the gable. The west gable is rendered, and to the rear is an outshut with a late 18th-century casement window beneath a deep stone lintol. An attached single-storey extension, with a small-pane casement window, a boarded door and garage doors, sits on the east gable and is covered by a double Roman clay tiled roof. The interior of the cottage was not inspected. The facade of the building is similar to that of the Devonshire Arms Hotel to the west, suggesting they were both reshaped during the same period.
