Description

Stuckeys House is a detached house dated 1782, located on the east side of The Green in Long Sutton. It is built from local lias stone that is cut and squared, with a facade of red brick in English bond and Ham stone dressings. The roof is plain clay tiled, featuring stepped coped gables and brick end chimney stacks. The house has two storeys and three bays. The windows are casement style, with three lights below and two lights above, featuring iron framed opening lights and rectangular leaded panes. The windows have gauged brick flat arched heads with central keystones. At the eaves level between the first and second bays, there is a moulded stone plaque inscribed "M/WH 1782". The second bay has a 20th-century timber, glazed, and tiled porch that protects a six-panel door with glazed toplights. There is also a single-storey 20th-century lean-to on the north side, which incorporates an early stairlight window in the gable above a casement window. The interior has been considerably modified in the 20th century. The Stuckey family, who were prominent bankers in Somerset during the 19th century, owned this house in the early 20th century.
