Description
The Long Sutton War Memorial is a war memorial erected around 1920, made from carved Hamstone. It is located at the edge of the churchyard and has an octagonal shape. The memorial features a Latin cross with octagonal arms and a shaft that rises from a plinth set on a six-stepped base. The plinth has a chamfered top and a fretted cornice, with each of its four sides displaying a trefoil-arched inscription panel. The inscription on the east face reads: "TO THE GLORY/ OF GOD/ IN THANKSGIVING/ FOR VICTORY AND PEACE/ AND TO THE/ HONOURED MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF/ THIS PARISH WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918." The north and east faces list the names of those who lost their lives, while the south face includes the inscription: "1919/ (NAME)/ ERECTED BY/ THE PEOPLE OF/ LONG SUTTON/ 1939-1945/ (NAME)." The memorial is enclosed by low boundary walls with stone coping, featuring piers and an iron gate on the west side.
