Description

The war memorial located in the churchyard of St Cuthbert, approximately 10 meters south of the southwest corner of the church, was built around 1920 and amended after 1945. It is constructed from Doulting stone ashlar and designed in a medieval style. The memorial features a two-moulded-step octagonal base, a square plinth with base broaches, and an almost cuboid base with corner-attached shafts. It has a moulded base and a top frieze adorned with florets, which frame bronze panels displaying the names of the war dead. The square main shaft has an incised design of a sword pointing downwards on the north face, transitioning into an octagonal shape with ogee crocketed gables above shields featuring national emblems. At the top, there is an ornate tabernacle, square in plan, with a bronze figure in an ogee niche on each face, topped by a crocketed pyramidal roof.
