Description
The walls enclosing the churchyard of St Cuthbert are primarily early 19th century in date and constructed from random rubble local stone, featuring ashlar copings and gate piers. On the north side, adjacent to The Old Almshouse on Chamberlain Street, the wall stands about 1 meter high with pitched coping. There is a gate in the north-east corner, which has square ashlar gate piers with plinths and moulded shallow bell-hip tops, along with cast-iron gateposts and gates that include spear rails and curved braces.
The east wall has flatter rounded coping and also averages 1 meter in height, curving inward towards the south-east corner. It features an opening at the corner with plain rectangular piers that are the same height as the wall. The south side returns to match the east wall, with a gateway opposite the south porch. The piers here are taller and match those of the north-east corner, supporting a pair of cast-iron gates adorned with ornamental cross finials and other decorations.
The west wall serves as a boundary with various adjoining properties and breaks westward about halfway along. At this point, there is a stone lean-to building from the 19th century, possibly a former mortuary chapel, and this wall averages 2.5 meters in height. Further north, the wall continues at about 2.5 meters high, featuring a gateway in the center along the boundary with Chamberlain Street, returning to the Almshouses.
