Description

No. 80 High Street is a house with a shop, dating from the 18th century to early 19th century. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings, all covered in colourwash, and features a hipped Welsh slate roof with brick chimney stacks.

The building has two storeys with an attic and consists of two bays. The ground floor includes a late 19th-century shop window, which has a central recessed doorway with a fanlight, thin mullions, and rounded top corners. There is a deep fascia with a moulded cornice. The shop front extends to the left with two panes in the same style and continues with the same detail to the adjoining No. 78 on the right. On the first floor, there are two 12-pane sash windows with plain surrounds, gauged brick flat arched heads, and slim keystones, along with a 12-pane sash window on the return over the shop window. There are no windows in the attic. The building features bold alternating rusticated quoins at each end, a rough coved cornice, and a blocking course.

Inside, the ground floor has been modified, but a late 18th-century staircase with a hardwood handrail, turned newels, and stick balusters remains intact from the ground floor to the attic. Some partitions and doorcases are preserved at both levels. There is a later extension at the rear. The building has experienced slight settlement, causing the shop front to lean in one direction and the upper part of the building to lean in the opposite direction.
