Description

A short terrace of three houses located in Wells, dating to the early 19th century. The construction is of rubble, predominantly rendered, with an ashlar plinth and dressings, and slate roofs. Each house is a one-bay cottage, featuring an entrance to the left of the window bay, and all share a wide-span roof.

The houses are two storeys and have an attic, with a flat-roofed two-light dormer to each; the dormer to number 4 is blocked. The remaining windows are 16-pane sashes with raised plat surrounds and stone sills. The doorcases have plain pilasters supporting a plain frieze, moulded cornice, and blocking course, with the cornice carried on curved brackets above the pilasters. Numbers 4 and 5 retain their original panelled doors, while number 3 has a 20th-century part-glazed door. A deep plain plinth is present, along with flush pilasters at each end of the terrace. There are deep brick ridge stacks, with three flues to each party wall, and coped gables. The left gable is plain and unrendered and rises to a half-hip.

The interior was not inspected. The terrace is largely unaltered externally and occupies a significant position directly opposite the east end of St Cuthbert’s Church.
