Description
The war memorial, located in the churchyard about 5.5 meters south of the east end of the chancel of the Church of St Michael and All Angels, was erected in 1919 and designed by Sir Ninian Comper. It is made of ashlar stone and features an octagonal base with a plinth and a nosing for a seat edge. Above this is a further octagonal step, leading to a square base that has an octagonal top with shaped corners and a laurel wreath in relief on the north and south faces. The tapered octagonal shaft has a moulded capital that supports a tall carved head, which is gabled on all four sides and topped with a pinnacle. The head displays a crucifixion on the west side, the Virgin and Child on the east, and St George and the dragon on the north and south faces.
